People often inquire about the story behind my artist name, and it's a tale steeped in family and love. Proshka is a name that honors my Latin heritage, inspired by the maiden name of my beloved grandmother, Lia (Praskevics) Tattersfield. My grandmother embarked on a remarkable journey, leaving her hometown of Riga, Latvia, behind when she met my grandfather, Tom Tattersfield, a native of Leeds, England. Together, they ventured to Belize, a former British colony known as British Honduras back in 1948, where they established their new home. Among their three children was my mother, Deborah Tattersfield Gegg, who played an essential role in shaping our family's legacy.
Tragically, I didn't have the opportunity to spend much time with her, as cancer claimed her life when I was just two years old. As a heartfelt tribute to her memory, I adopted her maiden name, Praskevics, pronounced as Proshka-Vicks, and shortened it to Proshka. This name has remained with me ever since, symbolizing the enduring connection to my family's past and the love that binds us.
